For the sixth time, the mighty Paris Saint-Germain is present in Groenlo. The most successful club in France, which has won the Champions League in the past two years, has yet to secure a tournament victory in Groenlo. Team manager Theo Filippo is attending the Marveld Tournament for the second time – and if he has his way, it won’t be the last.
What do you think of the tournament?
“This is THE tournament if you want to play against the strongest teams. The competition is as tough as it gets – especially the Brazilians are very strong. Our team doesn’t play in a league; we mostly play friendly matches on Wednesday evenings. We often face Belgian clubs because Belgium is easily accessible from Paris. In addition to friendly matches, we participate in eight tournaments every year. Besides the Marveld Tournament, we also play in countries like Morocco and Hungary.”
Do you also play matches at the Parc des Princes?
“The Parc des Princes is the stadium for the first team’s home matches. We train and play at the campus in Poissy. The campus is located just outside the city and is brand new. The entire complex, aside from various training facilities, has as many as fifteen pitches. The boys in my team go to school here every day and also complete a two-hour training session daily.”
Are you satisfied with how the tournament is going?
“I’m definitely not dissatisfied. There are many strong teams here, and we finished third in our group. We’ve had quite a few injuries, and our best player isn’t here because he’s joined the U17s. So we won’t win the tournament, but we’re still learning a lot!”
