“The most talented player isn’t necessarily the best player of the tournament”

A council of wise men determines who will be named Player of the Tournament, Goalkeeper of the Tournament, and the Dream Team of the Tournament. Our wise men all have extensive experience as coaches/trainers for various clubs in the Achterhoek region. The committee consists of Jos Heutinck, Ivo Versteegen, Alexander Esseling, Tonnie Tjoonk, and Bert Roeterdink.

“First and foremost, it’s a lot of fun to do, and we enjoy the beautiful football. Everyone here can play well. We have a list of criteria that a player must meet. We look at game insight, speed, decision-making, technique, tactics, sportsmanship, respect, and whether the player is important to their team.”

Mapping the Players

“We randomly watch all the matches on Friday so that after one day, we’ve mapped out all the teams and all the players. On Saturday morning, we start with a list, and that selection gets smaller as the day goes on. If someone who wasn’t initially considered stands out later, they still have a chance. And it’s also true that the most talented player isn’t necessarily the best player of the tournament.”

“We’ve even created a group chat as a committee where we keep each other continuously updated. Now it’s time to put together the Dream Team by position within the squad. Essentially, a player needs to show over three days that they are valuable to their team.”
