Every year at the Marveld Tournament, there are players who happen to celebrate their birthday on one of the tournament days. The kitchen crew is always thoughtful enough to give the birthday player their own special shining moment — a true moment of fame — by walking in a conga line, singing and clapping, from behind the serving counter to the player’s table, carrying a (naturally) healthy little cake in hand. Many hands are shaken, the entire sports hall sings or claps along, and it becomes the best day of their life.

This Friday, no players had a birthday — but one of the kitchen crew members did: Lorin Walterbos. She got to blow out 24 candles. Of course, she wasn’t forgotten either. That evening, she was serenaded and put in the proverbial spotlight — because the real sun is something the hardworking men and women of the kitchen brigade rarely get to see. Work comes first!
